Alan-a-Dale: Robin Hood’s Merry Man
by Harry Ford
Last night I had a really cool email from a guy in Canada called Frosty. He and a few others had been looking for Robin Hood movie news and had found my blog. He went on to tell me about a Canadian musician Alan Doyle who will be playing one of Russell Crowe’s merry men. To be exact he will be playing Alan-a-Dale, a wandering minstrel who became a member of Robin’s band of outlaws.
It seems that Doyle met Crowe while the Australian actor was in Toronto filming ‘Cinderella Man’ in 2005. The pair became friends and musical collaborators; Doyle produced and helped write songs for Crowe’s 2005 album My Hand, My Heart.
Well I had to find out what sort of stuff Doyle and his band ‘Great Big Sea‘ played. Recently having discovered Spotify
has helped me listen to bands I may never have listened to or heard of before. Anyhow I loved thier stuff straight away. Folk rock I think is how I would describe it. A very Celtic song also in ‘Seven Joys Of Mary’ which I loved. I really Look forward to hearing what he brings to the movie.
Frosty also sent me a video of Doyle, Kevin Durand (Little John) and Scott Grimes
(Will Scarlet) all sporting beards (grown I’m guessing for the movie) being interviewed at the ‘State of Play’ Premiere about the new Robin Hood movie. This video has recently been taken off Youtube so I have replaced it with a music video of Doyle’s called ‘Straight To Hell’. Big thanks to Mark for the email and hope to hear more from you.
