Web designer notebooks & sketchpads

Moleskine Notebooks Price: Small £6, Large £15

If you are a web developer, designer or illustrator then this is the notebook you should have.  Moleskin notebooks are slightly more expensive than other notebooks you can purchase but their quality is pretty much second to none.

They come in many different varieties ruled, plain and my personal favourite, grid.  I always have at least one grid moleskin pad on the go.  Perfect for sketching web designs or logo ideas.

Whitelines notebooks Price: Notepad prices vary from £3 to £10 (Amazon)

I am a big fan of the Whiteline notebooks, as the name suggests, the lines in these notebooks are white.  The pages are a grey tone, and when you look at it closely,  you can see the grey is printed on the page as a pattern, so the white lines drop out, showing the actual color of the paper.  I found working with white lines makes these pads easier on the eye, the lines seem less disruptive to work with than dark lines of an equal weight on light paper.

The only thing I didn’t like about the Whitelines notebook is the binding is very hard and the spine just will not break, so the pad will not lay flat.

JOTTRR Notebooks Price: £8.95

The Jottrr notebook comes with interleaved plain and lines pages, one each to an opening.  The paper is extremely smooth with hardly any feathering occurring when writing.  The ink hardly shows through each page,  even when using a fountain pen.

It also includes lovely little touches, like page numbers on the lined pages, which add a lot to this quirky little notepad.

Piccadilly Notebooks Price: Small $6.95, Large $12.95

Whether you’re an artist doing coffeehouse sketches, working on your project, or just trying to get things done, one of the Piccadilly notebooks is sure to fit the bill!

It has an useful interior pocket which is expandable, for documents, cash or a very thin sandwich!!  The satin bookmark ribbon does not easily fray, and the elastic closure keeps your notebook tightly secured wherever you go.

Web design sketchpad Price: Single Project Book – $12, Full Sketchbook – $25.00

The Web Design Sketchbook is a carefully crafted set of website tools to help you through the process of planning and designing your web projects.  The Sketchbook starts with a set of design and content planning questions that cover everything from site objectives, design tone, to the information architecture or sitemap.

Muji notebooks and stationary Price: Notepad prices vary from £0.60 to £8 (Amazon)

I was reccomended Muji through an illustrator friend, who uses them for their affordable quality.  With some of their pads priced at £0.60 you can’t complain.  Their notepads are designed specifically for your every day needs.  You will find notepads in sizes B6 to A4.  So whether you’re jotting down client notes, sketching, or studying, Muji has the notepad ideal for the job. Plus, many of Muji’s notebooks are made from recycled paper, making them environmentally friendly.

They have also recently launched a simple notebook app for the iPadMuji notebook.  You can use the app for scribbling and doodling to your heart’s content.  It uses handwriting recognition and predictive text input, to make the process as fast and efficient as possible.

Noteletts notebooks Price: Small £6.99, Large £11.99

Super-smooth, thick, cream colored.  According to the company it is 100 gsm.  I have read some complaints about having their branding ‘Noteletts’ on the bottom right hand side of each page, However, it doesn’t bother me.  All the pens I have used on this pad  just glide across the page with no feathering, very little shadow on the other side of the page and no bleed-through whatsoever.  This is paper you want to write on.

Notebook of the future!

  1. Good collection of pads. Looking forward to Noteslate or something similar. It won’t be long until notes and sketches become a bit more digitised. You can’t beat a good moleskin in my eyes though!!! Nice article Harry…

  2. A great overview. Thank you. Is the JOTTR photo from you? I just wonder what make the the red fountain pen is.
